I now live and work in Greensboro, North Carolina. Nice town, I like it here. I've been busy practicing, composing and recording with occasional local performances.
Most of my free time in the last half of 2006 was spent composing a neo-classical concerto for piano and orchestra. I use a clever software product called Notion, which allows me to write music, note by note, measure by measure; then playback the score, using samples of real orchestra instruments from the London Symphony. Competing products use midi sounds, Notion let's you hear it close to what is will sound when performed by an orchestra, string quartet, etc. Composing feels good, it's pure creativity, very enjoyable.
This piano concerto for 20 instruments, "Struggle for Love in a Dream" (cf Hypnerotomachia Poliphili), was originally commissioned by a graduate student at the University of North Carolina, as the final bid for his PhD. When its eventually performed live, either the piano parts or in concert, I'll be sure to record it for your listening pleasure. More recently, I composed Pendulum Fantasie and Rach Three using the same Notion software. All three compositions are available for download on the Listen page.
Hope to see you soon - John
